£200,000 Waste Management Fine - 29th February 2016


A Waste Management Company was fined £200,000.00 following a fatal accident at their depot when a worker was crushed by a bucket on a motorised loading shovel.

the company was fined £200,000.00 for breaches of section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
 
Derby Crown Court was told last week (24 February) that in the 10 days leading up to the incident, CCTV cameras at the site captured more than two hundred examples of unsafe practices. These included dangerous activities while operating the shovel, such as lifting people in the bucket, and workers having to take evasive action to avoid being hit by vehicles.
 
The principle inspector said that the firm had not complied with the "basic legal requirements of training and supervision.
